Well, 5 gallons is as good a starting place as any, A 5gal carboy is going to cost about $22.00 new. You can probably get one used around $10.00. I have found that yeast choice is a very personal thing. You might want to go to some of the yeast websights or read our Mead yeast survey. Be brave and make a decision. For a 5 gallon batch of sweet thick mead I would use 15 pounds of honey. Also I would start with 2 of those packets of yeast. High gravity meads can sometimes get of to a slow start. Hope that helps
